This finger towel is a piece of white altar linen with a plain, uncluttered field and a single embroidered band across the lower end. The band is worked in one colour, and the towel is available in six: gold, silver, green, red, purple and blue. Against the white ground, the colour reads clearly and gives the towel a finished, deliberate edge.
The border is a repeating geometric design built on a large cross form, drawn in a double outline of raised satin stitch. A small cross sits in each of the open spaces around the central form, so the cross appears again and again along the band. The straight lines and interlocking angles give it a traditional, ordered look that suits the sanctuary.
The finger towel is used at the Lavabo during the Preparation of the Gifts, when the priest washes his fingers and dries them before continuing the Eucharistic prayer. The six embroidery colours let a parish coordinate it with the vestments and altar linens of the season, such as purple for Advent and Lent, green for Ordinary Time, red for martyrs and Pentecost, and gold for solemnities and festive celebrations. Silver and blue are available for feasts and special celebrations, according to local custom. For a matching set of altar linen, see our altar corporals in the same six colours.
The border is machine-embroidered at high stitch density, keeping the outlines sharp and the small crosses clearly formed. The band sits at the end of the towel, so it stays visible when the towel is folded and carried on the lavabo dish, while the plain white field stays clear for drying the hands.
Suited to parishes, chapels, convents, seminaries and mission stations, this towel is a practical, well-finished addition to the altar linen for daily and Sunday Mass.
