Cream Surplice with Agnus Dei Embroidery | Liturgical Vestment

This surplice is cut in a wide, gathered A-line from cream fabric, with a square yoke at the front and back and full bell sleeves. Pleats fall from the yoke to give the fullness traditional to the surplice, and the garment is worn over the cassock for Mass, choir and other liturgical duties.

A gold scrollwork border runs along the hem of each sleeve, and a matching wider border sits above the hem of the body, framed by two fine gold lines. Between the gold hem borders and the base of the garment runs a band of white lace insertion, giving the lower edge a layered, formal finish on both the front and the back.

At the centre front, above the hem border, is a machine-embroidered panel of the Agnus Dei: a lamb reclining with one foreleg raised to hold a cross-topped staff flying a small pennant banner, with the words "AGNUS DEI" beneath it and light gold scrollwork at either side. The Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God, recalls Christ's sacrifice and is a traditional motif for vestments and altar linens used at Mass.

The scrollwork borders and the Agnus Dei panel are machine-embroidered at high stitch density, keeping the fine lines of the scrolls and the detail of the lamb and banner crisp and well defined. The cream ground and gold embroidery are suited to daily and festive use alike.
