Description

When the Church vests in red, it speaks of two realities at once: the fire of the Holy Spirit who came upon the Apostles at Pentecost, and the blood of the martyrs who gave their lives rather than deny the Name. This red priest chasuble carries both realities in its embroidery — the JHS cross on the front and the Chi-Rho on the back, two ancient namings of Christ rendered in gold outline stitch that burns with particular intensity against the deep red ground.

The JHS cross on the front panel combines the sacred monogram with a stylised Latin cross in a single composition, the cross rising from the H of the Holy Name in a form that has been used in Catholic vesture and sacred art for centuries. On red, this emblem takes on the full weight of its martyrological associations — the Name for which the martyrs died, the cross on which Christ himself was lifted up. The gold outline stitch gives the motif a clarity that carries across the full width of the nave, readable from the back of the church without sacrificing the detail visible to those near the altar.

On the reverse, the Chi-Rho fills the back panel — the superimposed X and P of Christ's Greek name, one of the earliest symbols the Church ever used. Where the purple chasuble carries this same symbol in the register of penitence and preparation, on red it speaks of proclamation: the Chi-Rho that went before Constantine's armies, that was scratched into the walls of Roman prisons, that identified Christians to one another in an age when that identification carried real cost. On Pentecost Sunday or a martyr's feast, the Chi-Rho facing the congregation throughout the Liturgy of the Word becomes a silent act of witness in itself.

The gold trim running the full perimeter of the chasuble frames both panels with a clean luminous border, and the garment's cut — full-shouldered, generous in the sleeves — gives it a natural authority of movement during the entrance procession and the elevation of the gifts.

Priests who celebrate with this chasuble during the red feasts of the year may also wish to consider our Purple Priest Chasuble with JHS Cross & Chi-Rho Embroidery, which carries the same monograms in the penitential register of Advent and Lent.

This chasuble is prescribed for Pentecost Sunday, feasts of the Apostles, feasts of martyrs, Palm Sunday, and the celebration of confirmation. It is equally suited to any Mass where red is the assigned liturgical colour and the priest wishes his vestment to carry an emblem of the Name rather than a narrative image.

The chasuble is sewn from firm red fabric that drapes cleanly and holds its shape through extended celebrations. The gold outline embroidery is worked in quality threads chosen for durability and sheen, ensuring the JHS cross and Chi-Rho retain their definition through years of seasonal use.
