This cream priest chasuble speaks of care before it speaks of authority. At its centre, the Good Shepherd — Christ in a red robe, a white lamb held gently against his chest, shepherd's crook in hand — looks downward with the focused attention of one who knows each sheep by name. This is not a triumphant image but a pastoral one, and its placement at the heart of the chasuble sets the tone for every Mass at which it is worn: a priest standing at the altar not to rule but to tend, not to preside over a ceremony but to gather a flock.
The image draws on one of the oldest visual traditions in Christian art — the Good Shepherd appeared in the catacombs centuries before more formal iconographic conventions were established — and its presence on a chasuble carries that depth of tradition into the liturgical space. The lamb held in Christ's arms is the lost sheep found and carried home, a figure of the congregation gathered at every Mass, of every soul the priest is called to shepherd in his ministry.
On the reverse, the same devotional register continues in a different symbolic language. A gold Latin cross rises from a base of wheat sheaves and grapevine branches, the Eucharistic symbols of bread and wine that the Good Shepherd's sacrifice makes possible. The cross-with-wheat-and-vine composition, worked across the full back orphrey, connects the shepherd imagery of the front with the altar sacrifice of the Mass itself — the same love that carries the lamb is the same love that is offered at the altar.
Throughout both panels, a gold floral vine scroll runs along the sides and sweeps across the hem, and a gold cross motif sits at the collar front and back, framing the central imagery within a consistent decorative border. The gold trim running the full perimeter of the garment adds a luminous edge that catches the sanctuary light during the priest's movements through the liturgy.
Priests who celebrate a Mass honouring a different kind of apostolic dedication may also consider our Silver Chasuble with Saint Vincent Pallotti & Eucharistic Embroidery, which honours Saint Vincent Pallotti's call to apostolic service through a richly embroidered vocational vestment.
This chasuble is particularly suited to the Sunday of the Good Shepherd (the Fourth Sunday of Easter), ordination Masses, First Communion celebrations, and any liturgy where the pastoral character of priesthood is the prevailing theme. Its cream palette is equally appropriate for Christmas, Easter, and the solemn feasts of ordinary time assigned to white.
The chasuble is sewn from firm cream fabric that drapes cleanly over the alb and holds its shape through extended celebrations. The machine embroidery — including the detailed Good Shepherd portrait with its shaded red and white tones — is worked in quality threads chosen for colour retention, ensuring the image remains vivid and well-defined through years of regular liturgical use.
