This chasuble is cut in a full, flared shape from cream fabric, with a stand-up collar and gold piping along the scalloped hem. The wide, flowing cut gives fullness at the front and back, in keeping with the traditional chasuble silhouette worn over the alb and stole at Mass.
On the back, a tall lily stem rises from the lower hem, its leaves and buds worked in shaded gold and its open blooms picked out with fine detail in the petals. The lily is a traditional symbol of purity and is closely associated with St. Anthony, who is often depicted holding one.
On the front is a machine-embroidered image of St. Anthony of Padua, shown in his brown Franciscan habit with a knotted cincture, holding a lily in one hand and the Christ Child in the other, both with gold halos. St. Anthony is invoked for the recovery of lost things and is one of the most widely venerated saints in the Church, honoured on his feast day of 13 June.
The lily and the figure of St. Anthony are machine-embroidered at high stitch density, keeping the linework and shading of the habit, halos and Christ Child clearly defined. The gold edging and embroidery suit both daily use and the saint's feast day.
Suited to parishes, shrines and religious communities under the patronage of St. Anthony, this chasuble is worn for his feast day, novenas and devotions throughout the year. For another saint-themed chasuble in a similar gold and cream styling, see our golden St. Michael chasuble.
